My Husband Invited His Ex-Wife to His Birthday Because She Was “Still Family”—But He Never Expected What I Did Next
PART 5
Mark moved toward her.
“Please, just stay. It’s my birthday.”
Then he turned to me.
“And you need to apologize.”
I stared at him.
“For what?”
“For ruining my birthday!”
Something inside me became very still.
I looked at the candles on the cake, the half-empty glasses, the dinner I had spent hours preparing, and the guests who had come to celebrate a man I genuinely loved.
I had planned every detail.
I had ordered his favorite cake from a bakery across town. I had bought the watch he had admired months earlier. I had even written him a letter that I intended to read after dinner, telling him how excited I was about becoming parents together.
The letter was still inside my handbag.
I had imagined this evening ending with him holding me close and thanking me for making his birthday special.
Instead, I was standing in front of our friends while he demanded that I apologize for defending myself.
I reached into my handbag and pulled out the small gift box I had bought for him.
I placed it on the table beside the envelope.
“Happy birthday, Mark.”
He looked at the box.
“What are you doing?”
“Giving you your present.”
He opened it impatiently.
Inside was the watch he had wanted.
For a brief second, the anger on his face gave way to surprise.
Then he looked at me again, as though he expected the gift to erase everything that had happened.
“I don’t understand you,” he muttered.
I nodded slowly.
“That’s becoming very clear.”
I turned toward the guests.
“I’m sorry your evening has become uncomfortable. You came here to celebrate Mark, and I genuinely hope the rest of your night goes well. But I’m going upstairs for a while.”
Mark grabbed my wrist.
“You’re not going anywhere. We’re not finished talking.”
I looked down at his hand.
“Let go of me.”
He released me.
I walked toward the stairs without another word.
Behind me, I heard Claire whispering something to him. I couldn’t make out the words, but I heard Mark answer her.
“It’s all right. I’ll handle it.”
I’ll handle it.
As though I were another household problem that needed fixing.
I went into our bedroom, closed the door, and sat on the edge of the bed.
For several minutes, I simply breathed.
I wasn’t planning to leave my husband over one terrible birthday party. I wasn’t going to make a life-changing decision in the middle of an argument.
But I wasn’t going to pretend that nothing had happened, either.
I placed my hand on my belly.
“I’m going to protect us,” I whispered.
I didn’t know exactly what that would mean yet.
I only knew that my child deserved to grow up watching two parents who treated each other with respect.
And I deserved a marriage in which I didn’t have to fight for the right to be acknowledged.
A few minutes later, someone knocked.
I expected Mark.
Instead, Rebecca opened the door a few inches.
“Can I come in?”
I nodded.
She closed the door behind her and sat beside me.
“I’m sorry,” she said.
I looked at her in surprise.
“For what?”
“For not saying something sooner. I noticed how Claire was behaving, and I saw what Mark said to you. I should have spoken up.”
I swallowed the lump in my throat.
“Why does everyone act as if this is normal?”
Rebecca sighed.
“Because Mark and Claire were married for eight years. They didn’t have children, but their families became close. After the divorce, everyone wanted to keep the peace. Claire stayed friends with his parents, came to family events, and called whenever she needed advice.”
“That doesn’t bother me by itself,” I explained. “I don’t expect Mark to erase eight years of his life. I knew he had a past when I married him.”
“I know.”
“But every time I try to build something with him, he brings up how Claire did it before. I feel like I’m being graded against a woman who isn’t even married to him anymore.”
Rebecca looked down at her hands.
“I think Mark has gotten used to having both of you in different roles. Claire knows his history. You are his future. But he hasn’t learned that respecting his history doesn’t mean allowing it to control his present.”
Her words stayed with me.
“Do you think he still loves her?”
Rebecca took a moment before answering.
“I can’t tell you what Mark feels. But I can tell you that he likes being needed. Claire knows how to make him feel important, and he likes that. Sometimes people confuse being needed with being loved.”
I looked toward the closed door.
“Then he needs to decide what kind of husband he wants to be.”
Rebecca nodded.
“Yes. And you shouldn’t have to make that decision for him.”
We sat quietly for another minute.
Then Rebecca stood.
“For what it’s worth, I think you handled yourself better than most people would have.”
I gave her a tired smile.
“Honestly, I don’t feel as though I’ve handled anything. I just know I can’t keep pretending that I’m fine.”
“Then don’t.”
She squeezed my shoulder and left.
I remained in the bedroom for another twenty minutes.
Downstairs, the party continued, although the cheerful atmosphere had disappeared. Eventually, I heard chairs moving and guests saying their goodbyes.
