My Husband Invited His Ex-Wife to His Birthday Because She Was “Still Family”—But He Never Expected What I Did Next
PART 4
And Mark had laughed with her.
He had actually laughed.
Now he wanted me to believe that I was the one making a scene.
I looked at him and said quietly, “You invited your ex-wife into our marriage tonight. I simply refused to disappear to make her comfortable.”
Rebecca slowly put down her glass.
“Mark,” she said, “I think you should listen to your wife.”
He turned toward her.
“Don’t get involved.”
“I’m already involved. I’m sitting here watching you embarrass her in front of all of us.”
Claire immediately shook her head.
“Nobody is embarrassing anyone. This is just a misunderstanding.”
I almost admired how easily she said it.
She had moved my things, occupied my seat, and treated my kitchen like a place she still controlled. Yet now that someone had challenged her, she wanted to call the entire evening a misunderstanding.
I returned my attention to Mark.
“The papers aren’t a threat. They’re records of what we agreed to when we bought this house. I wanted you to remember that I didn’t move into your life empty-handed, and I didn’t marry you to become someone who has to compete with your past.”
Mark stared at me.
Then he looked at the documents again.
“But why now?” he asked. “Why bring this up tonight?”
“Because tonight you showed me that you were willing to let another woman diminish my place in your life, and then blame me for objecting.”
I paused.
“And because I have a baby to think about now.”
My hand moved instinctively to my belly.
That was the moment Rebecca’s expression changed.
She looked at me, then at Mark.
“She’s pregnant, Mark. She’s carrying your child. What are you doing?”
He rubbed his forehead.
“Everybody is overreacting.”
But nobody answered him.
The guests had begun to understand that this wasn’t really about dinner, flowers, or a chair.
It was about a husband who had confused being kind to his ex-wife with allowing her to disrespect his current one.
And Claire, who had spent the entire evening smiling as though she had won something, was beginning to realize that the room was no longer on her side.
Still, she wasn’t ready to surrender.
She picked up her handbag.
“Well, I can see I’m not wanted here anymore.”
Mark immediately turned toward her.
“Claire, don’t go.”
Those four words hurt more than I expected.
Not because I wanted Claire to stay.
Because my husband had spent the evening ignoring my feelings, yet he was suddenly worried about hers.
Claire glanced at me.
“I didn’t come here to cause trouble. I came because Mark asked me to be here.”
“That’s true,” I said. “He invited you. You didn’t force your way into the party. But you were responsible for how you treated me once you arrived.”
She pressed her lips together.
