“Have you ever heard of a Claire Mercer?”

Michael was silent for a moment.

“Why?”

“Just answer the question.”

“I know the name from some historical investment documents. Why?”

Aaron’s expression changed.

“Claire’s maiden name was Mercer.”

Michael said nothing.

Aaron stared at the letter.

He had known Claire’s grandfather was wealthy.

He had known the family had owned property.

He had even attended a dinner where an older investment manager had greeted Claire with unusual respect.

But he had never bothered to ask what that respect meant.

Claire had never flaunted her inheritance.

She had never used it to win an argument.

She had never reminded him that her family had been financially secure long before he entered her life.

He had mistaken her restraint for dependence.

And now he was beginning to wonder whether he had misunderstood something far more important.

“Find out what the connection is,” he told Michael.

Michael’s voice became cautious.

“We should let the legal department handle that.”

“I’m asking you to find out.”

“Then I’ll ask the legal department what information can be shared through the appropriate channels.”
