My Parents Were Poisoned—Then My Husband Found What Was Hidden in Their House

PART 8

The vehicle belonged to one of Richard Vale’s employees.

A former security contractor.

They found the SUV abandoned near an old warehouse.

We went there with police.

Inside, they found nothing.

Except a chair.

A blanket.

A glass of water.

And a note.

She was never here.

My heart sank.

Then Daniel noticed something.

“There.”

He pointed toward the floor.

A small blue thread.

My mother’s sweater.

Harris picked it up.

“She was here.”

We searched the building.

Nothing.

Then Michael noticed an old map on the wall.

“That’s the river road.”

He pointed.

“This warehouse connects to an old service tunnel.”

Harris stared at him.

“How do you know?”

“My father used to bring me here when I was a kid.”

We followed the tunnel.

It led to an abandoned office building.

And there, in a locked room, we found my mother.

Alive.

Weak.

Terrified.

I ran to her.

“Mom!”

She grabbed me.

“Emily.”

“Are you okay?”

She nodded.

Then she whispered,

“Your father was right.”

“About what?”

“Richard wasn’t working alone.”

My blood ran cold.

“Who else?”

She looked over my shoulder.

Her eyes landed on Michael.

Then she said,

“Someone inside our family helped him.”

Everyone froze.

I turned toward Michael.

My mother shook her head.

“Not Michael.”

She looked at me.

“Kara.”

I felt the room tilt.

“What?”

“Kara was forced to help him.”

“Why?”

“Because Richard had something.”

“What?”

My mother began crying.

“He had evidence that Kara had taken money from one of the accounts.”

I stared at her.

“But she didn’t.”

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Because he forged the records.”

Everything suddenly made sense.

Richard had trapped Kara.

If she spoke, he’d accuse her of theft.

If she stayed quiet, he controlled her.

He used her knowledge of the company to learn what my father knew.

Then he used her to get inside the house.

But she hadn’t poisoned my parents.

She had been trying to remove the poison from their food.

She had arrived too late.

Someone else had already tampered with it.

And the missing eleven minutes?

Kara had deliberately cut the camera.

She didn’t want Richard to know she had been trying to help.

I looked at my mother.

“Why didn’t Kara tell us?”

“Because Richard threatened to kill you.”

My heart broke.

All these days, I had believed my sister had betrayed us.

When she had actually been trying to protect me.

Then another voice came from behind us.

“I told you she would eventually tell you.”

We turned.

Richard Vale stood in the doorway.

He was holding a gun.

Two men stood behind him.

Detective Harris immediately reached for hers.

Richard smiled.

“Don’t.”

He pointed the gun at my mother.

I stepped in front of her.

“You want the box.”

“Yes.”

“You can have it.”

Michael looked at me.

I shook my head slightly.

He understood.

Richard demanded,

“Where is it?”

I looked him directly in the eyes.

“You already have it.”

His smile disappeared.

“What?”

I pointed toward the doorway.

Detective Harris had been recording everything.

Every word.

Every threat.

Every confession.

Richard realized it.

He turned.

One of his men reached for a weapon.

The police moved faster.

Within seconds, the room exploded into chaos.

A gunshot hit the ceiling.

Someone shouted.

My mother screamed.

Then Harris tackled Richard to the floor.

The second man surrendered.

The third ran.

Michael chased him into the hallway.

Seconds later, the police had him too.

Richard was handcuffed.

But even then, he kept smiling.

“You think this ends with me?”

Detective Harris leaned toward him.

“No.”

She smiled slightly.

“That’s why we’re interested in the other names.”

Richard’s expression finally changed.

Fear.

Three months later, my parents were home.

My mother still walked slowly.

My father needed physical therapy.

But they were alive.

That was enough.

Kara moved into a small apartment nearby.

She stopped working for the company and became one of the state’s key witnesses against Richard.

The investigation eventually uncovered more than ten million dollars in stolen funds.
