The Apple Watch Series 10, which will be available later this year, is about to be unveiled. A recent rumor from the South Korean publication The Elec claims that the tech giant is making significant advancements in the next smartwatch’s display technology, which will provide users with longer battery life. According to The Elec, thin-film transistor (TFT) and low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) technology will be paired to create a brand-new OLED screen for the Apple Watch Series 10.

It is anticipated that this improvement in display technology would maximize the watch’s functionality and lead to a longer battery life than the Apple Watch Series 9 model.

According to the article, Apple is reportedly abandoning the use of low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) technology in most of the Series 10 switching transistors. LTPS technology will instead be limited to a small number of remaining switching TFTs and circuits outside of the Pixel region. It is expected that this tactical change would contribute to improving the next smartwatch’s battery life.

Unveilings of Apple Watches usually coincide with those of iPhones. For example, the Apple Watch Series 9 made its debut in conjunction with the iPhone 15, the Apple Watch Series 8 with the iPhone 14, and so on. This pattern makes sense since, although the Apple Watch Ultra and cellular-enabled Apple Watch can operate on their own, they are really accessories for smartphones, handling media playback from smartphone apps and displaying notifications.

Why LTPO is superior to LTPS

According to the source, Apple intends to apply the LTPO TFT to the OLED in the Apple Watch 10 series. This technique involves adding oxide to the driving and some switching TFTs, out of the 7 to 8 TFTs. The Apple Watch’s LTPO TFT uses LTPS for the driving and remaining switching TFTs and oxide for the remaining two switching TFTs.

When oxide is used for a driving TFT rather than LTPS, oxide is in charge of the TFT that is directly connected to the OLED pixel. Oxide has been utilized in LTPO OLEDs to lower leakage current, but it now plays a bigger role in the new LTPO OLED. Vendors of panels who excel in oxide technology can be useful.

Only the remaining switching TFTs and circuits beyond the pixel region will employ LTPS if oxide is added to some of the driving and switching TFTs in Apple Watch 10 series OLEDs as planned by Apple. The role of LTPS is diminished.

This indicates that a far more power-efficient OLED display and possibly shorter battery life are anticipated for the Apple Watch Series 10.
