With Universal Pictures releasing the action-packed vengeance story “Monkey Man” in theaters on April 5, Oscar-nominated actor Dev Patel will be directing his first feature film. Through his Monkeypaw Productions, Jordan Peele is the film’s producer. The first trailer for the movie was released on Friday morning.
According to the press release, Patel plays Kid, an unnamed young guy who makes a modest living by beating up more well-known fighters for cash every night in an underground fight club while donning a gorilla mask. The story of Hindu deity Hanuman served as the inspiration for the movie.
“After years of repressed rage, Kid finds a way to infiltrate the enclave of the city’s sinister elite,” reads the logline. His enigmatic scarred hands unleash an explosive campaign of retribution to get revenge on the individuals who stole everything from him as his childhood trauma boils over.
The violent action shown in the teaser looks like it belongs in a “John Wick” film. In order to get brutal retribution, Patel’s character stabs, bludgeons, and shoots his way past assailants. He even violently stabs a man in the neck at one point while holding a knife between his teeth.
Based on his own story and screenplay co-written with Paul Angunawela and John Collee, Patel directed “Monkey Man.” Although it was initially scheduled for Netflix, Monkeypaw’s film deal with Universal is allowing it to be released in theaters.
Sobhita Dhulipala, Pitobash, Vipin Sharma, Ashwini Kalsekar, Adithi Kalkunte, Sikandar Kher, and Makarand Deshpande are among the cast members.
Patel, Peele, Jomon Thomas, Ian Cooper, Win Rosenfeld, Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, Christine Haebler, and Anjay Nagpal are the producers. Jonathan Fuhrman, Steven Thibault, Andria Spring, Aaron L. Gilbert, Natalya Pavchinskya, and Alison-Jane Roney are the executive producers. In partnership with WME Independent and Creative Wealth Media, Universal Pictures presents a production from Bron Studios, a Thunder Road movie, a Monkeypaw production, and a Minor Realm/S’Ya Concept production.
The film also stars Sharlto Copley, Sobhita Dhulipala, Pitobash, Vipin Sharma, Ashwini Kalsekar, Adithi Kalkunte, Sikandar Kher and Makarand Deshpande opposite Dev Patel.

In Hollywood, Sobhita Dhulipala debuts
