Exiles Are Annoyed by an American Porn Star's Visit to Iran

Whitney Wright was granted a visa just like any other foreign citizen, and the Iranian authorities have denied any involvement in her visit, claiming they were unaware of her “obscene” career.

An American porn star boasted on social media about visiting the Islamic Republic and posting images there, including the closed US embassy, prompting claims on Monday that she was supporting propaganda for Iran’s government.

Whitney Wright

Whitney Wright was granted a visa just like any other foreign citizen, and the Iranian authorities have denied any involvement in her visit, claiming they were unaware of her “obscene” career.

Known for her harsh criticism of Iran’s fiercest ally, Israel, Wright’s articles have especially infuriated Iranian expatriates since they depict her scrupulously adhering to the rigorous Islamic clothing code for women in the wake of the 2022 countrywide demonstrations against the mandatory hijab.

Following Mahsa Amini’s death in police custody in September 2022—she had been detained for allegedly disobeying clothing codes—those protests broke out.

Prominent Iranian dissident in the US Masih Alinejad said on X, “American porn star Whitney Wright is in Iran, my birth country, where women are killed for simply showing their hair and being true to themselves,” adding that Wright was “completely covered up” in the pictures.

“Iranian women don’t want to obey a discriminatory law,” she stated.

Wright posed in front of a flagpole at the US embassy, which was shuttered after diplomatic ties between the US and Iran were severed due to the Islamic extremists’ 1979–1981 hostage-taking of staff members. The US flag was shredded on the ground.

In keeping with the dress code, she wore a large coat, pant suit, and encompassing headscarf. This was a far cry from the scant attire that her one million Instagram followers are used to.

“Whitney Wright, an American porn star, was invited to Tehran to promote the Islamic republic,” the Association Femme Azadi, a French organization for Iranian women, stated on X. “They stop at nothing.”

While acknowledging that “it is not forbidden” for Americans to travel to Iran, foreign ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanani in Tehran denied knowing about her trip.

She was not invited by any Iranian organizations, a source informed the Tasnim news agency, and the visa system “was not aware of the nature of her immoral and obscene occupation.”

Wright responded to criticism of her trip photos, which seem to have been taken down, by posing the question, “Posting photos of my Iran trip now means I’m pushing Iran propaganda?”

“Just sharing what I saw on the inside and outside.”

She had clearly departed Iran, according to Iranian media, though it was unclear how long she had been there. She also posted photos from Egypt, Lebanon, and Morocco, suggesting that she was on a trip of the area.

This isn’t the first time a porn celebrity has caused controversy when she travels to Iran: British adult entertainment star Candy Charms underwent nose surgery there in 2016.
