PART 2 — THE DOOR THEY TOLD ME NOT TO OPEN The closet knob turned another fraction of an inch. I stood frozen in the hallway with Lily burning against my chest, the 911 dispatcher still talking through the phone pressed between my shoulder and ear. Everything I had seen since entering that house was […]

PART 2 — THE NAME ON THE DEED “Read the name out loud, Dad,” Emily said quietly. “Read it to your wife. Then I will tell you both exactly what happens to people who try to sell my house.” Greg stared at her. Dana stopped breathing. I sat at the kitchen table with both hands […]

PART 2 — The House They Thought Was Theirs Dad had told me I was unwanted. Mom had just admitted they expected me to absorb it quietly. And somehow, until that moment, I had still been trying to convince myself that Christmas had been an impulsive mistake. It wasn’t. They had discussed it. They had planned […]

PART 2 — THE STORY HE TOLD ABOUT ME “The Story He Told About Me” I stood in the Harbor House kitchen with a stack of folding chairs pressed against my hip, listening to Sophie breathe on the other end of the phone. “Claire,” she whispered, “Dad’s been telling us you don’t want us around […]

PART 2 — THE TITLE SHE NEVER KNEW EXISTED Margaret answered the phone with the same smile she had worn while pouring champagne. “Hello?” I watched the smile disappear. Not slowly. Instantly. Her fingers tightened around the phone. “What do you mean, police?” Beverly lowered her glass. Trevor stopped chewing. Margaret looked at me. For […]

PART 2 — THE ACCOUNT HE SWORE DIDN’T EXIST Scott’s eyes stayed on me for half a second too long. That was all I needed. My attorney, Rebecca Hale, stood beside the witness stand holding a single sheet of paper between two fingers. “Mr. Mercer,” she said, “I’ll ask again. Do you recognize the account […]
