PART 2: THE SON DAVID TRIED TO ERASE I stared at Emily, waiting for her to explain, but she seemed physically incapable of getting the words out. Leo shifted against my chest, making one of those tiny sleepy noises that usually melted every ounce of tension from my body. This time, it only made Emily cry harder. She pointed at the faded photograph. “His name was Noah,” she whispered. I looked down again. The baby in the picture couldn’t have been more than a few days old. A tiny knit cap covered his head. Wires disappeared beneath his hospital blanket. His little mouth was slightly open, and one hand rested beside his cheek. And even through the grainy photograph, I could see it. The shape of his eyes. The tiny bridge of his nose. The same features I had spent three months memorizing on Leo’s face. My stomach tightened. “Emily…” “My first pregnancy was seven years ago,” she said. “Before our son Mason. Before the house. Before everything people see on Facebook.” She sat down slowly on the edge of my couch. I remained standing. Something inside me was screaming not to get comfortable. Whatever was inside that folder was going to change my life. “Noah was born six weeks early,” Emily continued. “The doctors told us almost immediately that he had Down syndrome. He also had a serious heart defect. They said he would probably need surgery.” Her voice cracked. “David didn’t take it well.” That sentence made every hair on my arms stand up. I thought about David staring at my five pregnancy tests. That baby cannot be born. I tightened my arms around Leo. “What did he do?” Emily looked straight at me. “At first? Nothing. That was the worst part. He just became cold.” She swallowed. “He stopped touching Noah. Wouldn’t hold him. Wouldn’t even stand beside the incubator unless a nurse was watching.” My throat went dry. Emily pulled another photograph from the folder. This one showed her lying in a hospital bed, exhausted and pale, with David standing beside her. He was smiling. That perfect David smile. The same smile that had fooled me. The same smile probably hanging in framed photographs all over their house. “I had complications after delivery,” Emily said. “Heavy bleeding. They had to take me back into surgery. I was heavily medicated for almost two days.” She stopped. I already knew I wasn’t going to like what came next. “When I woke up properly, David told me Noah had died.” My heart seemed to stop. “What?” “He said Noah’s heart failed during the night.” Emily pressed a fist against her mouth. “He told me the doctors tried everything. He said he didn’t want me seeing Noah afterward because it would destroy me. He said he had already signed the necessary paperwork.” I stared at her. “No funeral?” “A cremation.” “Did you see—” “No.” The word came out sharp. “I never saw his body.” Silence swallowed my apartment. Outside, a truck rumbled down the street. Somewhere upstairs, someone dropped something heavy. Normal life continued while mine cracked open. Emily looked at Leo again. “For seven years, Sarah, I believed my son died in that hospital.” Believed. Not knew. Believed. I slowly sat in the chair opposite her. “What changed?” “You.” My blood went cold. Emily wiped her face. “When your message came through, I thought it was some kind of scam at first. Then I saw Leo’s picture.” She pointed toward my son. “And I nearly fainted.” “Because he looked like Noah?” “Because David once told me something I never forgot.” I waited. “He said if Noah had been healthy, our life would have been perfect.” I felt sick. Emily continued. “He apologized afterward. Said grief made him say horrible things. I convinced myself he didn’t mean it.” A bitter laugh escaped her. “I spent seven years convincing myself of things.” Welcome to the club, I thought. Then she slid a document across my coffee table. It had the hospital logo at the top. Northwestern Memorial. My hands started shaking before I even picked it up. “What is this?” “Noah’s discharge record.” I looked up. “You said he died.” “So did David.” I looked back down. There it was. DISCHARGE STATUS: STABLE. My vision blurred. “No,” I whispered. Emily nodded slowly. “He didn’t die.” I felt my stomach drop so violently I thought I might actually throw up. “What happened to him?” Emily pulled out another document. Then another. Then another. Medical records. Legal forms. Photocopies. An intake sheet from something called Lakeshore Family Placement Services. And at the bottom of one page, a signature. Emily Hayes. Except Emily was staring at it like it belonged to a stranger. “That isn’t my signature,” she said. I looked at her. She didn’t blink. “David forged it.” The room went silent again. “He surrendered Noah?” Emily’s face collapsed. “While I was recovering from surgery.” I covered my mouth. “He told the hospital we had privately arranged for Noah to be placed with another family. He produced paperwork with my signature giving consent.” “Could he even do that?” “He shouldn’t have been able to.” Her voice hardened for the first time. “That’s why there are lawyers involved now.” I looked down at Leo. My baby was sleeping peacefully, completely unaware that the man who had helped create him might have once done something monstrous to another child just like him. A thought hit me. “Emily… where is Noah now?” She didn’t answer. Instead, she reached deeper into the folder. My heartbeat accelerated. Finally, she placed a newer photograph on the table. I stared at it. A little boy stood beside a lake, grinning into the camera. He had sandy hair. Bright eyes. A gap between his front teeth. He was wearing a red life jacket and holding a fishing pole. And he was unmistakably alive. My eyes filled instantly. “Oh my God.” “His name is Benjamin now,” Emily whispered. I looked at her. “He was adopted by a family outside Evanston. A couple named Laura and Michael Bennett.” Emily touched the edge of the photograph with one finger. “They raised him.” “Have you met him?” “No.” Her face crumpled. “They don’t even know I know where he is.” My heart broke for her. But then another thought slammed into me. “How did you find all this in two days?” Emily’s expression changed. The grief didn’t disappear. Something harder moved underneath it. “Because I stopped asking David questions.” She looked directly at me. “And started asking everyone else.” Apparently, after receiving my message, Emily had gone downstairs to David’s home office while he was at work. She knew the code to his locked filing cabinet because David, arrogant as ever, had used Mason’s birthday. Inside, she found old financial records. Hospital bills. Payments to Lakeshore Family Placement. A confidentiality agreement. And one envelope containing copies of Noah’s original records. “He kept them?” I asked. “Every page.” “Why?” “I don’t know.” Then Emily paused. “Maybe because men like David don’t keep souvenirs out of love.” She looked toward the folder. “They keep evidence because they think they’ll always control it.” That sentence sat heavy between us. Then she told me she had called the hospital. At first, nobody would tell her anything. So she called an attorney. The attorney obtained records. The records led to the placement agency. The placement agency led to the Bennett family. And suddenly, seven years of grief had transformed into something far more terrifying. Her son had not died. Her husband had simply removed him. I couldn’t understand how someone could survive discovering something like that and still be sitting upright. “I would kill him,” I whispered. Emily gave me a strange look. “I thought I would too.” “What stopped you?” She looked at Leo. “Mason.” Her living son. Of course. “If I attack David, I become the unstable wife. If I scream publicly without proof, he calls me hysterical. If I confront him too soon, documents disappear.” Her eyes hardened. “So I’m not going to scream.” For the first time since she entered my apartment, Emily looked nothing like a devastated wife. She looked dangerous. Not violent. Focused. “I’m going to destroy every lie he built.” I should have felt relieved. Instead, another fear crept into my chest. “Why did you come here?” Emily’s eyes met mine. “Because David knows you contacted me.” My entire body froze. “How?” “I confronted him about the affair.” “You confronted him?” “Only about you. Not Noah.” Emily leaned forward. “I asked him who Sarah was.” My palms became slick. “What did he say?” Her jaw tightened. “He said you were unstable.” Of course he did. “He said you were a woman from work who became obsessed with him. He told me you manipulated him into sleeping with you and deliberately became pregnant because you wanted money.” My mouth fell open. “That lying—” “I know.” “No, you don’t understand. He told me he was single. He—” “I know, Sarah.” Emily’s voice was calm. “I found six months of hotel receipts.” That shut me up. “He paid for most of them using a business credit card he thought I never checked.” She pulled out printed statements. Restaurant charges. Hotels. Flowers. Everything. Our relationship reduced to transactions on paper. “He lied to both of us,” Emily said. Then she took a slow breath. “But that isn’t the reason I came here before sunrise.” Something in her tone made my skin prickle. “What reason?” Emily reached into the folder one last time. This time, she removed a white legal envelope. My name was printed across the front. SARAH MITCHELL. I stared at it. “How do you have something with my name on it?” “I took it from David’s desk.” I didn’t touch it. “What is it?” Emily hesitated. And that hesitation scared me more than everything else she had told me. “Sarah, when David realized I knew about Leo, he didn’t panic because I discovered the affair.” My heart was pounding now. “He panicked because Leo exists on paper.” “I don’t understand.” Emily slid the envelope toward me. Inside were copies of court documents. A petition. Affidavits. Something about emergency custody. Something about parental fitness. I couldn’t focus. “What is this?” Emily’s eyes filled with tears again. “David is preparing to claim that you’re mentally unstable.” I laughed once because the alternative was screaming. “He doesn’t even want Leo.” “No.” Emily shook her head. “He doesn’t.” “Then why would he ask for custody?” “He isn’t trying to raise Leo.” Her voice dropped. “He’s trying to control where Leo goes.” My stomach turned. Emily tapped one page. David had claimed I was financially unstable. Emotionally volatile. Unable to manage Leo’s medical needs. He had even listed my hospital debt. My apartment. My work schedule. Details I had never told him. “How does he know all this?” “I don’t know.” I flipped to another page. Then I saw something that stopped me cold. Proposed temporary placement. Not with David. Not with Emily. With a private residential care organization. I looked at the name. My hands went numb. Lakeshore Family Placement Services. The same organization that had taken Noah. I couldn’t breathe. “He’s trying to do it again.” Emily nodded. Leo began stirring against my chest. I held him tighter. “No.” “Sarah—” “No.” My voice became louder. “He doesn’t get to come near my son.” “I agree.” “I will disappear before I let that man take him.” “That’s exactly what you cannot do.” I stared at her. “If you run, he uses it as evidence that you’re unstable.” My thoughts raced. “Then what am I supposed to do?” Emily leaned forward. “We document everything. We get you a lawyer. We establish paternity legally. We preserve the messages where he threatened you.” My head snapped up. “You knew about the threat?” “You mentioned abandonment in your message. I guessed there was more.” I remembered David standing in my apartment. If you ever reach out to my wife, I promise you will regret it. For months, I had been terrified of those words. Now they felt different. Now they felt like evidence. Emily reached across the table. For one strange second, the wife and the mistress looked at each other across a pile of proof created by the same man. “I hated you for about thirty minutes,” she whispered. I swallowed. “Fair.” “Then I realized something.” “What?” “You didn’t know I existed.” Her eyes filled. “And I didn’t know the man I married existed either.” I didn’t know what to say to that. So I said nothing. Then Emily reached out cautiously toward Leo. “May I?” Every instinct in my body screamed to protect him. But there was something in Emily’s face that made me understand. She wasn’t looking at David’s affair baby. She was looking at the baby she had lost seven years ago. Slowly, I shifted Leo toward her. Emily took him into her arms. The second she felt his weight, she broke. Not dramatically. Not loudly. She just folded around him and cried. “Oh, sweetheart,” she whispered. Leo opened his eyes. He stared up at her. Then, because my son had absolutely no understanding of emotional timing, he grabbed a fistful of Emily’s hair. A watery laugh escaped her. I laughed too. For perhaps ten seconds, the room felt human again. Then someone pounded on my apartment door. Three hard knocks. Emily froze. So did I. Another knock. “Sarah Mitchell?” A man’s voice. My blood ran cold. Emily immediately handed Leo back to me. “Don’t open it.” “Who is it?” The voice came again. “Ms. Mitchell, I have legal documents for you.” Emily and I stared at each other. “How could he have filed already?” I whispered. Her face had gone white. “He told me last night his attorney was preparing them.” The man knocked again. I walked toward the door but kept the chain locked. “What documents?” There was a pause. Then the answer came. “Emergency family court petition.” My knees nearly gave out. I looked through the peephole. A middle-aged man stood there holding an envelope. But he wasn’t alone. At the far end of the hallway stood another man. Dark coat. Perfectly pressed shirt. Hands in his pockets. David. Watching my door. My heart stopped. Emily stepped beside me and looked through the peephole. The second she saw her husband, her entire expression changed. David slowly lifted his phone. Mine vibrated. A text appeared. DAVID: You should have listened when I warned you. Then another message. DAVID: Open the door, Sarah. And before I could even process it, a third message appeared. This one contained a photograph. A photograph taken from outside my apartment building less than an hour earlier. Emily walking through the entrance. Underneath it were six words that made both of us go completely silent.
